
 
 
Traditional Korean graves are marked
by raised mounds. Typically they are about 1 meter in height. However, the
graves of kings and other major historical figures are much larger. A grave
like this is called a Tumulus. These are found all around Gyeongju. The largest
single grouping is at Daerungwon where there are 23 tombs.
 
 
These tombs are somewhat like the ancient
pyramids in that posessions were buried for the afterlife. At Daerungwon, one
tomb has been excavated and opened. It shows the construction which included a
sealed central cavity for the burial chamber.
 
 
The area is developed like a park.
