Daerungwon Tumuluses

Tumulus

Traditional Korean graves are marked by raised mounds. Typically they are about 1 meter in height. However, the graves of kings and other major historical figures are much larger. A grave like this is called a Tumulus. These are found all around Gyeongju. The largest single grouping is at Daerungwon where there are 23 tombs.

Square Pagoda

These tombs are somewhat like the ancient pyramids in that posessions were buried for the afterlife. At Daerungwon, one tomb has been excavated and opened. It shows the construction which included a sealed central cavity for the burial chamber.

Bulguksa

The area is developed like a park.
